A Day by the Sea
With an open mind, endless sights to see.

What did I see,
walking by the sea?
Sail boats,
earth’s natural energy,
filling majestic sails,
gliding across,
deep blue waters,
adventures begin.
Buoys,
holding their place,
rain or shine,
well-placed markers,
red and geen,
navigation linchpins.
Kayakers,
paddling with ease,
making their way,
anywhere they please,
freedom seized,
faces with grins.

Gulls,
everywhere to be seen,
some by themselves,
others meeting on roofs of tin,
observing life from the ground,
or gliding frictionlessly,
above all of earth’s sins.
Otters,
cracking mussels and clams,
lying on their backs posing,
the ocean’s leading hams,
eat and dive,
snacking on urchins.
Seals,
bellowing under the pier,
bellowing on the rocks not near,
soaking up afternoon sun,
all looking well-fed,
most with double chins.
Jellyfish,
spineless and carefree,
a little like me,
poetic in their natural habitat,
out of water flat and lifeless,
aquatic has-beens.

Seaweed,
beach and sea,
the ocean’s vegetable,
a delightful snack,
or an entire meal;
nutrient-dense within.
Fisher-men,
a women too,
tying knots,
casting lines,
sitting in meditation,
waiting for dinner.
People,
disembarking a boat,
back from a tour,
to spot animals,
not close to the shore,
looking like they need a shot of gin.
Statue,
remembering the workers,
that made this bay great,
hauling in the catch of the sea,
thin muscular and lean,
leather for skin.

Candy,
buckets full,
sea taffy of course,
English toffee,
ice cream and chocolate turtles,
sweet to have after fish ’n chips.
Guitar,
strummed by a man,
singing for supper,
his music today,
not much in demand,
even though his song anything but sin.
Homeless,
men sit by the merchant stalls,
telling tales of how they are old and ugly,
not better for divorce,
needing a beer,
alcoholism their thing.

Sourdough,
lunch bread and bowls,
this is “The Bay”,
clam chowder within,
tasty as any food can be,
but not sure it would keep me thin.
Sun,
drenched me from head to toe,
a full day it has been,
time to go,
relaxed and restored,
today be a win.
